YOUTH CHATTER...

Pachaug Area Bass Masters
Take time to work with youngsters
On June 11, 2006 the
BASS affiliated Pachaug Area Bass Masters held their annual Kids
derby on Ashland Lake, Jewett City, Ct. The Jacques Cartier Club
assisted as well as opening its facilities to the youth activity.
The lake was an ideal place for the use. It offers excellent fishing
from both shore and water. Lilly pads and grass added new experience
for many. Thirty-five children ages three to fifteen were aided by
sixteen members of the club throughout the morning. Sunny and
slightly breezy weather served as a background for thirty minutes of
fishing from a club member’s boat for each young angler followed by
the annual cookout and Awards. Many returnees’ parents say this is
the only time they get on a boat all year, and it seems that many of
the parents are as anxious for this event each year as their
children.
In addition to the actual fishing, emphasis was placed on
environmental awareness, safety on and off the boats and the type of
fishing gear available with their usage. Prior to the derby the club
has an informal tournament so the youngsters can see a weigh-in and
the fish available for them to catch.
The first, second, and third place winners were:
1st place Richard McFarland 7.6lbs.
2nd place Jacob Barber 4.5lbs
3rd place Kyle Gleason 3.9lbs
In addition to first, second and third place prizes all participants
received a bag full of fishing goodies from worms to spinner bates.
Congratulations to all!
Special thanks to:
Bob’s Place Bait & Tackle for their generous discounts on purchasing
of tackle and worms for this event.
The Jacques Cartier Club provided a wonderful lunch for all anglers
and their families as usual. Many thanks were passed around by all.
