2009 Connecticut State BioBlitz - June 12 & 13

http://a.espncdn.com/winnercomm/outdoors/bassmaster/ii/b_con_horton_blog_story.jpgThe Center for Conservation and Biodiversity and Connecticut State Museum of Natural History are host to a unique program called the BioBlitz. Designed as part contest, part festival, part educational event, part scientific endeavor, the BioBlitz brings together scientists from the University of Connecticut and other organizations from across the region in a race against time to see how many species they can count in a 24-hour biological survey of a Connecticut park. The public is invited to observe the scientists' activities, to interact with them, and to participate in other activities that are presented by the Museum and a host of invited nature-oriented organizations.

Fish funding on the agenda in Congress

http://a.espncdn.com/winnercomm/outdoors/bassmaster/ii/b_con_horton_blog_story.jpgWASHINGTON — Politicians will be tinkering with the financial backbone of the nation's fisheries management and conservation programs during this session of Congress, as well as other pieces of key legislation that will affect sportfishing. Atop the legislative agenda is the federal motorboat fuel tax portion of the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund (Wallop-Breaux).

2008 Scholarship

From left to right are Ryan Malloy, Katie Malloy, Anson Smigel, Kelly Malloy, and David Santos

The Connecticut B.A.S.S. Federation Nation awarded its second annual Conservation Scholarship. In honor of our past President Bob Malloy, the 2008 scholarship was renamed the Robert S. Malloy Memorial Scholarship and was awarded to Haddam, CT resident Anson Smigel.

Anson a graduating senior was majoring in Natural Resources with a concentration in Fisheries Management, and had a cumulative GPA of 3.52/4.0. His goal is to pursue a graduate level education and acquire a full time position with a Government Agency in Fisheries Management.

For summer employment he worked with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as a Fisheries Research Technician. In that position he was instrumental with a lake drawdown research project, shore seining and electofishing for juvenile fish, gastric lavage and zooplankton sampling and identification, and juvenile fish otolith extraction, mounting, and determining age by daily growth rings.

We are very proud to award Anson with this scholarship.

Invasive Species

1. Water chestnuts on the CT River - The CT DEP would like your help in collecting and monitoring the spread of this EXTREMELY INVASIVE AND HARMFUL PLANT.

If you see what you think is chestnut, try and collect it from the river, note the GPS location (if possible) and call the DEP at (860) 424-3034.

For more information check out http://www.audubon-mas.org/pages/fwchstnt.htm

2. An invasive algae known as didymo has made it's way into the Connecticut River in Vermont and New Hampshire, and it's creeping south. DEP Inland Fisheries Director Bill Hyatt says, “didymo or Didymosphenia geminata, is native to Northern Europe, but it's been spreading over the last ten years. Typically it only likes cold clear water but for some reason it's spreading to other places," he said. Environmentalists say that this algae will eventually get to Connecticut, but large bodies of water, like the Connecticut River, aren't the biggest concern. The D.E.P. worries about it being transported from the river into smaller streams and lakes, where it can do the most harm. The only way to prevent it from spreading is for boaters and anglers to check, clean and dry their boats, waders and all fishing equipment. It only takes a small amount of this algae to cause big problems.

If anyone comes in contact with these or any other Invasive Aquatic Species please contact the CT DEP at 860-424-3474, or you can contact me at 860-627-0834 (h) 860-869-7722 (c)

Warmest regards,
David A. Santos
